Ice choked

June 2, 2014

The Canadian weather services have forecast a heavy ice year in the North Atlantic and with a month to go before we leave Halifax, Nova Scotia and head north along the west coast of Newfoundland and through the Belle isle Strait, our route is still blocked with ice.

It is probable that another month will see this ice disappear but from the top of Newfoundland we still have 1,500nm to go to the top of Baffin island and the start of the NWP. At present the whole coast of Labrador and Baffin island are clothed in ice and it will take a combination of good weather and wind to clear the coastline of their icy blanket.
