Ice in the Dark

The late melt of the sea ice this year has meant that the dark nights are upon us and we have had no option but to continue to move in poor or no light. This is not only unnerving but also dangerous and even with good watchkeeping the floes are almost invisible until you are right upon them. This is even more of a problem with fast melting first year ice that loses it blue/white colour as well as the heght above sea level that enables you to spot it early.

We arrived in Gjoa Haven at 9.00pm, once again the first boat to do so in 2014.

A good nights sleep and some time ashore to send and receive e mails, weather and ice and we will be on our way to Cambridge Bay where we hope to pick up our spares and prepare for the long haul onwards to our winter quarters in Alaska.
