Easter Island, Rapa Nuie or Isla de Pascua

October 28, 2016

The 2,300nm passage from Ecuador to Easter island was notable more for some serious mechanical issues rather than the sailing. Despite a slow start, motor sailing into light headwinds we still managed to complete the passage in 15 days.

The last 24 hours were pretty horrible with torrential rain, big seas and squalls, so it was good to arrive in the main anchorage and only town of Hanga Roa.

The island is of course famous for it large stone statues that continue to create debate over their purpose and part played in the islands history. Wikipedia does a far better job than I could ever do of trying to explain all of this so I will content myself in saying that the island is really interesting, the people are friendly and welcoming and there are stone statues everywhere and it is not always easy to know which are ancient and which less so!
