Friends Alan and Noi came to visit in Cremieu and Alan and I met up with Alex Jura in Chamonix for some glacial travel and crevasse rescue training. There had been a significant snowfall 5 days before we went up, so conditions on the glacier were perfect, both for some great trips and for practicing our rescue techniques.
Although Alex had some experience of galcier travel and rescue techniques, for Alan this would be the first time he had used crampons and ice axe and the descent from the Midi station at the top of the Aiguille du Midi is not for the faint hearted. With a drop of 1500ft to the north and a lesser drop but directly into a bergschrund to the south, even the most experienced must use caution during the descent to the glacier.
We based ourselves in the Cosmiques Refuge at an altitude of 3,500m and with conditions still excellent we took the opportunity to cross the heavily crevassed glaciers to the Torino Refugio overlooking the Aosta valley in Italy.
All in all a great few days well spent!
