Winter Wonderland

September 13, 2017

We had timed our arrival hre in South Georgia almost a month earlier than is the norm in the hope that we would find better snow conditions at sea level that would ease access to the ice cap above.

We were disappointed to find that the relatively dry, warm winter had left the lower slopes bare and had resigned ourselves to ferrying equipment up onto the glaciers before we could begin our ski tours.

It was a surprise therefore to wake the following morning to find the boat and the mountains around covered in inches of new snow.

Sadly the weather system that brought this snowfall has also brought a few days of very high winds that will keep us tied up here in Grytviken until Sunday.
