The Great Man

September 18, 2017

For anyone with a sense of adventure, the exploits of Sir Ernest Shackleton are legendary and our journey to Grytviken on South Georgia gave us not only the opportunity to repeat the traverse over the mountains he made with Tom Crean and Frank Worsley after their 850nm open boat journey from Elephant Island but also to visit his grave here in the old whalers graveyard at Grytviken.

Many people come to pay their respects and share a glass with him and also Frank Wild, Shackleton's trusted right hand man whose ashes were buried here at Grytviken some 70 years after his death in South Africa having been discovered by a writer researching a book. While Shackleton made 3 expeditions to Antarctica, Frank Wild made 4 and is one of only two men to be given the Polar Medal and 4 bars.
