This long leg from Uruguay and along the coast of Brazil was always going to be a bitter sweet experience, with so much to see and so little time available if I was to limit the time away from home I would need to cherry pick where we stopped and what we wanted to see. Security would also be an issue with some parts of the coast now deemed unsafe for yachts, particularly in the north around the Amazon basin.
With Omar's input we decided that after Ilhabela we would first visit Paratii, not only a Unesco World Heritage city of historic importance but also the home of Amyr Klink's Paratii 1 and Paratii 2, the first the aero rigged boat in which he circumnavigated Antarctica and the second the 100ft aero rigged schooner that he continues to sail.
We were fortunate to find Igor, Paratii 2's boat captain on board and spent a few hours being shown both boats, discussing the similarities with my own Novara and sharing our experiences.
The visit into the old Colonial city was no less interesting with its many historic buildings.
